History fair project?

It has to be about triumph and tragedy in history. But I don't want to do any wars or the holocaust. Any ideas?

American Imperialism. The triumph is American economic growth, power, and influence. The tragedy is the fact that we subjected other peoples, by force, to our will.

You may want to rethink the war thing. The Civil War would be an easy topic.

The Union was saved, slavery abolished= good!

Hundreds of thousands dead, land in ruins, President Lincoln assassinated, and the ill will bred by Reconstruction in the South = bad.

How about womens sufferage.....
Hindenburg disaster
You are doing the National History Day Project, too??

I'm doing the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster. For a full month I was going to do the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.

You could do the Gold Rush, the history of chocolates (my friend's doing that one), Marie Curie (I was thinking about that one for a month, too, before thinking about Challenger), any local newspapers, the Route 66, the Silk Route, any Chinese Dynasties, any European kings/queens, any famous bridges (a guy I know loves bridges), and even technology!!! (but you have to be a LOT more specific) The possibilities are endless.
How about the Civil Rights movement and the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and/or Malcolm X?
The breakup of Martin and Lewis, and their subsequent individual successes
titanic =) im doing a history fair project too. the triumph was they had more safe laws/rules in a boat they were careful of their passengers. tragedy was that everyone died...
Triumph and tragedy...in that order or could the sadness be triumphed. You could do like 9-11 maybe and how we all grew closer together. Or maybe, and it is involved in a war, but how Pearl Harbor was attacked and we triumphed after that. Just a thought or two.
