I am wanting an adventure tourer eg.Honda Varadero, Triumph Tiger, Aprilia Caponord. As it will be used alot with a pillion passenger and full panniers, will a 600cc bike, which is about right for a new rider, be too small or should I buy a 1000cc bike, which will carry the weight, about 350lb(155Kg), but may be too powerful?
I have just passed my motorcycle test and was wondering what bike to buy?husqvarna
It's difficult to advise somone on what bike to purchase. Have a good look around and compare what extras you are going to get with different bikes as these can be expensive if they are optional. Heated grips are must. (first thing I did on my 2 bikes fitted them) When a bike is loaded with panniers / pillion etc it can increase the overall weight quite dramatically so take this into consideration too. Don't forget that a bike going solo will handle differently to a loaded machine Although a bike may have a large capacity engine look at the B.H.P. of the motor it can be around about 80'ish give or take a few horse powers so it won't necessarily be "powerfull" but a good steady engine that will just go for miles and miles with out any undue stresses on the engine or the bike in general and give you plenty of "torque" at mid range revs. You don't want an engine that is screaming its head off when you are touring it will drive you crazy. Also bear in mind that if you are buying a tourer because of the lower B.H.P. the insurance will be that bit cheaper but this might be wiped out as you will have to increase the cover for your pillion as this is normally an extra. Look at the seat height too you don't want to be struggling trying to keep the bike steady when you are loaded and stationary you want both feet planted firmly on the ground not on tippy toes. Some bikes come with adjustable seat heights. Don't forget your pillion will he / she be comfortable on the back for long distances too.Consider the fuel consumption and the range that the fuel tank will give you between refills. If you are not in a desperate hurry to buy ask around any friends etc. or even if you see someone with a touring bike don't be shy go over to them and have a chat. You'll find that most bikers love to talk about their bikes and experiences. Start buying bike magazines too there is lots of info in them. Once you have made a choice and been on your first trip you will love touring its a great way of getting around.
